Overview
The Progression Tree is the way that the player progresses through the game by opening new tiers and unlocking technologies. The tree has four paths: Common Path, Labour, Kingdom, and Clergy. Each path has five tiers, within which are various unlockable technologies and abilities. Tiers are unlocked when the player reaches a certain level of Prosperity (for the Common Path) or Splendour (for the other paths), and the technologies within are unlocked by the player spending Gold Coins (for the Common Path) or Influence (for the other paths). Prosperity, splendour and influence are all markers of the overall power of the city.
The Progression Tree is accessed via a button on the User Interface, in the group of buttons on the panel at the top right. There is also the Progression Panel, second from left at the top of the UI, which summarises the town's overall Prosperity and amounts of Splendour and Influence for the three Estates.
Prosperity
The Prosperity rating automatically unlocks new tiers in the Common Path as it rises. Players can then purchase upgrades in each unlocked tier with gold coins. As implied by the name, Prosperity is an indicator of how prosperous the village is overall. The breakdown of prosperity can be seen at the top of the Progression Tree. The factors that influence prosperity are:
- Wealth: highest monthly net income to date.
- Territory: the total number of territories the village owns.
- Commerce rating: an average taken from the number and level of trade routes available.
- Population rating: a combination of the number of villagers and their status.
- Splendour: an average of the types of splendour produced by buildings in the town.
- Beautification: an average of the beautification produced by decorations in the town.
- Gold Coins: the current total gold in the treasury and the total treasury space available.
In most of the above, natural city growth will lead to an increase in Prosperity; as the village grows, more villagers will arrive and the player will buy new territories, resulting in an inevitable increase.
Splendour and Influence
The Splendour rating automatically unlocks new tiers of the relevant path as it rises. Players can then unlock technologies within each unlocked tier by paying Influence of the appropriate type.
Splendour is gained by building and decorating monuments according to type. Civic buildings such as the Manor House, Tavern and Market contribute to Labour splendour, religious buildings such as Churches and Monasteries contribute to Clergy Splendour, and military buildings such as the Keep contribute to Kingdom Splendour.
It's important to note that not all parts of the above buildings contribute to Splendour. Building parts which do so are marked in the build menu with a Splendour star as pictured above. Typically these building parts are decorations and the more expensive core buildings and doors.
Influence can be earned as a Quest reward, but otherwise constantly accrues over time according to the corresponding Splendour rating; the higher the Splendour rating, the faster Influence builds up. The Splendour rating also imposes a limit on the amount of Influence the player can have, and if Influence exceeds this maximum (e.g. because of a Quest reward), it will gradually decrease until it matches the limit. For example, if the Splendour rating is at 0, Influence is also limited to 0.
Paths
Common Path
The Common Path offers technologies that are required for all towns, such as fences, bridges, resource storage, food and goods industries and decorations.
Labour
The Labour path focuses on civic technologies, unlocking the Manor House, Tavern, paved roads, improved Markets and different types of taxation.
Kingdom
The Kingdom path concerns military development, and unlocks weapons industries and various improvements to the Keep such as the Healing House and Provisioner.
Clergy
The Clergy path is orientated towards religion and unlocks improved Churches and Monasteries, including a number of monastery-specific industries such as the Apiary and Vegetable Garden.
