The Progression Tree is the way that the player progresses through the game by opening new tiers and unlocking technologies. The tree has four paths: Common Path, Labour, Kingdom, and Clergy. Each path has five tiers, within which are various unlockable technologies and abilities. Tiers are unlocked when the player reaches a certain level of Prosperity (for the Common Path) or Splendour (for the other paths), and the technologies within are unlocked by the player spending Influence. Prosperity, splendour and influence are all markers of the overall power of the city.

The Progression Tree is accessed via a button on the [[UI Overview|User Interface]], in the group of buttons on the panel at the top right. There is also the Progression Panel, second from left at the top of the UI, which summarises the town's overall Prosperity and amounts of Splendour and Influence for the three Estates.
